Most of us should be used to the overcast-ness and rain-ocity of the great northwest, but holy smokes! The storm last night was fantastic! And forgive me for speaking of weather, because I know that it's the most boring thing ever, but I really truly thought that thunderstorms didn't exist here. Earlier this week, I saw one meager lightning strike just east of Mt. Tabor when I was walking home...

Cycling is going really well since the weather is nice. I rode 398 miles (just shy of my target 400-500 per month this summer) in June and I did quite a bit of hill climbing work, with over 20,000 feet climbed for the month (the month previous was about half that). Diet-wise, I sort of hit a wall, recording the same weight at the previous two or three months. I exercised my ass off in June but I...

"Summer afternoon - summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language." British author Henry James would enjoy today since it should be in the 80's. I was thinking how the weather can almost be a character in a novel. Remember the heat in the courtroom in To Kill a Mockingbird? Those emotional scenes of the trial wouldn't have been the same...

The reporting on biofuels is consistently moronic, equaling the lunacy of using food to run cars. Seems the NY Times just figured out what the "bio" in biofuels means. Gas = Corn Corn = Plant Flood/Drought = Dead Plant Dead Corn = No Gas Sheesh......

Wow! What a terrific, terrific time we had on the garden tour! Once again, I am just plumb tickled to see what a joyful celebratory spirit we have here in Foster-Powell. The weather was less than perfect, but the garden...

Another great week at Keuka. We had our usual mix of weather but managed to get in a good range of activities, including some hardcore track work down in Hammondsport (Jacob is on a rigorous fitness program this summer), some golf in Hornell, the usual array of watersports, and some fishing (and eating of fish). Julie's dad Jerry and step-mom are off to Maine for about 10 days on a...

With high temperatures in the state and the July 4th holiday looming ahead, things can get a little crazy around here. Don't believe the temperature readings you see for the coast. Many weather reports tagged us as in the 50's yesterday. It was 80 degrees in the shade at my house. So it's already hot, and it's crazy, people are shooting off fireworks starting like last week. It's a recipe for...

Weather Conference ExtraOkay, I lied...I figured no posts until next week, but I'm here at the weather conference relaxing on the computer. A few thoughts about the upcoming heat/thunder: 1. Hot! I see models are back up around +22 to +24 850mb temps Saturday and Sunday afternoons. And the WRF-GFS has a good 4-5 mb. surface easterly gradient Saturday morning. That may push PDX to 100 degrees Saturday...

this week - What's Coming To The Market This Week? - Cooking Ideas - Kebabs Looks like we have a nice weekend coming up. Hot but at least it is seasonally correct weather. The Wilson Pool opens at noon on Sunday if you are looking for a place to cool off. Ayers Creek Farm returns to the market this weekend after a several month hiatus. Little Pots and Pans and Salubrious are at the market...

aubrey & timAubrey and I exchanged several emails over the course of the week last week, speculating on the weather. It was looking dismal there for awhile. BUT the sun came out and the air was warm and slightly breezing, making a splendid afternoon for an outdoor wedding! PHEW! The wedding was small, simple, intimate & BEAUTIFUL, as Tim & Aubrey were surrounded by their nearest and dearest. The love...
