Yesterday
I woke up early, having to finish my deadline, but not with edgy nerves and wound-up energy. The beagles and I cuddled and I allowed myself to wake slowly. The sun wears thick, gray clouds today. The neighbors left for work hours ago, so I listen to the intermittent creaking of their gate. Puck snores. Pip groans in protest as I shift in a more comfortable position. The traffic rolls down 33rd,...

In Denver, thousands upon thousands of people stood in the hot alpine sun to get into Invesco Field. Once inside, they were treated to speeches, songs, videos, and general good feelings. From my screen it looked more like a really sweet summer festival- without the hashish and beer, of course! Chills went down my spine when Dr. MLK JR's children came out. They looked like well to do, ordinary,...

[MOSS PUNK] I have 15,826 songs on my iPod. In the past two weeks, I've really only listened to 12 of them. I'm smitten with Old Growth's second full-length, Under the Sun. So when I mention this trio in the same breath as two well-loved PDX acts normally beyond compare—Dead Moon and the Exploding Hearts—I hope you'll forgive me my trespasses. This was just what was needed to revitalize...
I read somewhere that a stand of aspens, those beautiful shimmering trees, are connected by a common root network, and so they are, in fact, just one organism. Even their leaves decay at the same rate. Their white bark glimmers in the sun, and sometimes to my untrained eye, even their trunks look similar. This is not like their cousins, the paper birches. We hiked through a stand of...

Easily distracted, I am. Especially when I find a web site based on an idea brilliant in its simplicity and stunning in its execution. Welcome to Constant Setting, featuring a single photograph taken in a place where the sun is setting at the moment you view it. (As I write, the fiery sky of Bora-Bora is...

Sun Saeteurn, Caddis Fly customer and U of O grad, is currently living in Thailand. He recently went fly fishing for Barrumundi and sent us the following report: I went Barrumundi fishing this past weekend at some private ponds right outside of Bangkok. I caught many Barrumundi, as these are the strongest fish pound for pound I have ever fished for. The initial strike is really something else....posted on Oregon Fly Fishing Blog in Eugene - 2:31 PM
The Salmon Street Fountain provided a nice respite from Saturday's sun.Slideshow below(Photos © J. Maus) Despite scary-high temperatures last Saturday, the Portland stop of New Belgium's Tour de Fat still drew an enthusiastic crowd. Things kicked off with a bike parade and an estimated 300 people wearing all manner of silly outfits and freaky bikes took part....
