See what happens when you go get your oil changed in Eugene? Jam ensues. Yeah, yeah, I couldn't resist another flat of Bentons when I passed the fruit stand on West 11th, and this time I was not sucked in to pectin-free promises, so I made a light, lovely batch of low-sugar pectin strawberry jam...

97 degrees Saturday. 94 degrees Sunday. I moved to the Arctic Circle (which Oregon is a part of) to get away from this hot weather bull crap. Nothing to do but lay in bed, eat Hood strawberries with ice cream and moan about the heat. Which is just what I did all weekend. I'm perfecting the nasal intonation of my whine to ensure maximum insufferabilty. It's hottttttt. This just in...it was...

Today, I spent quality time in the garden. It was about 75, crisp and sunny...the raspberries and strawberries are just starting to ripen. I rolled along on my little garden cart, leaning over to weed the berries...and noticing a really ripe one here and there. I had a child-like urge to reach out and grab one and deposit it directly into my mouth. I could only see one that was ripe, so I leaned...

In college I had a kick-ass summer job. I worked on short film and commercial sets in Los Angeles, assisting an art director. The hours were crazy, the driving with a Thomas Guide all over LA was crazy, but it was a crazy fun summer. I worked on the sets of Splash Mountain at Disneyland, Queen Mary, McDonalds, and a bunch of industrials and a short artsy film. On the film I was wardrobe assistant....filed under: short film, strawberries
"Wine is sunlight held together by water." This morning the sun is streaming through our windows and, preparing for the hot day ahead, we just went out to water our strawberries and hanging plants. I was reminded of this quote by the Italian scientist and philosopher who was born in Pisa in 1564. Perhaps with Galileo's knowledge of astronomy and with the improvements he made to the telescope,...

Oregon strawberries are everywhere, especially at the farmers markets. Sold in flats (12 pints) and oh so hard to resist. Which provokes the seasonal question of 'just how much shortcake can I really eat?'. Now some of you might raise your eyebrows at that question, while you spoon up the last of your strawberry shortcake breakfast, not missing a drop of whipping cream. I respect your abilty...
Today in our week of exploration of the strawberry, we shall drink them. Cheers! Strawberries are perfectly delicious in a little drinky drink. Mashed and muddled, or cooked and strained, they add a bright taste as well as bright color to your libations. Pictured here is a lovely creation by our friends (waving at S & K!) and is a Strawberry Rhubarb Cooler. Yes, were back to...filed under: strawberries

Edit: Back from berry picking. Picked 24 pounds and now it's on to the jam. Anyone wanna come help? Every summer I find it hard to keep up this blog. There is just so much life to be lived. This morning we're going to pick strawberries. I couldn't believe it when I called the farm and discovered that strawberries were $20.00 for a flat or for ten pounds. That's highway robbery! Last year I...

Local strawberries are finally here! I picked a heaping bucketful of red ripe berries last week at my parents' house and we have been enjoying them with a sprinkling of powdered sugar, blending them into breakfast smoothies and making Chocolate-dipped Strawberries for dessert. My own strawberry plants have just started to produce a bowlful every few days for fresh eating. A bit more...filed under: strawberries
