Fresno, California is with without question the raisin capital of the world. But you cannot get California raisins for your oatmeal. Hard to believe, but it's the perfect example of how corporate structures fail. Corporate franchises cannot accommodate local needs or improvise for their local communities. In the case of Denny's Restaurant on Olive Way in Fresno, (and probably among...

Q. Barbie and Ken arrive at a fancy restaurant in her pink Corvette. Who parks the car? A. The Valet of the Dolls. (Heh heh heh. So it goes.) + + + + + + + + Vowing revenge on his English teacher for making him memorize Wordsworth's "Intimations of Immortality, Warren decided to pour sugar in her gas tank. But he inadvertenly grabbed a sugar substitute, so it was actually Splenda in the...

An over dose of sleeping pills wont kill a large man with insomnia. If five of the f---ers wont get you to sleep it’s idiotic to think thrity will will make you sleep forever. My suicide note was lame anyway. I believe now suicide attempts are for quiters. Walking death is for walkers and death is for those who can’t afford to live. I am happy to be alive, and my wife is a munument...was superior. We snorted lines of coke with the regularity of breathing as we discussed opening a restaurant of our own where servers...

Get set for the biggest, most important Portland restaurant opening of the year this Thursday on upper SE Hawthorne Boulevard, as the long awaited, much anticipated Por Que No Taqueria “Dos” opens. Okay, maybe it’s not the biggest opening. And probably the importance is more personal that universal, but when I can stroll down the street to 4635 SE Hawthorne and get my share...

I have only one personal Kevin Duckworth story. It was the heyday of the Drexler Blazers, and I sat at the next table from Duck at a fancy Sunday brunch -- I believe it was in the restaurant at the then-still-pretty-new Riverplace Alexis Hotel. The guy was huge. He was there with a young gal of about the same age, whom he absolutely dwarfed. In those days, I ate and drank all I could at any...

I've just recently been enjoying the band Dire Straits... well, one song anyway: "So Far Away." I used to work at this kitchy, fake Texan restaurant in Northwest Indiana called Texas Corral, before I was fired for calling the maintenance guy an inbred. I thought I was being Mr. Funnyman when I asked the bartender, "Who's the inbred?" "That's Charlie, the maintenance guy, you asshole!"...

I don't have parties very often; it takes a major event in my life before I throw open the doors to more than a few people. That's why a group of my foodie friends were surprised to get an invitation to a last minute gathering at my house a few weeks ago. Even more surprising, was what a strange party it became. I always try to be a good host with lots of things to nibble on to counteract...share a new experience and to bond. Highly recommended Gemini's Grace - Lance J. Mayhew, 50 Plates Restaurant, Portland, OR. 2 oz. Teq...

Lake Superior Storm CloudsI borrowed these two pictures from the Upper Michigan site today. This is how thunderstorms form over Lake Superior. One does not see these particular cloud formations in Oregon. These storms form almost on the ground? Not high in the sky like out here. I really like these cloud formations. Just after these cloud join together it gets very dark and then the skies open up....at Fred Meyer. And after I got home I had a dinner appointment with some other people at Cloud 9 Restaurant. Looks like tomorrow is g...
