Ashland report: Hedda in the headlightsThe Further Adventures of Hedda Gabler, Jeff Whitty's festive romp through a field of razor blades, brings to mind a couple of things. The first is the flap over the now infamous New Yorker magazine Obama cover illustration, the one that takes the various racial and incendiary whispers about the presidential candidate and his wife and gives them visual form. It's clearly satirical, and...is a nice history to this production. Whitty grew up not far from the festival, in Coos Bay on the Oregon Coast. Rauch, the new artisti...

Oregon Coast Safety Tips: Spotting Dangerous Waves: "They kill, injure or maim indiscriminately. They come without warning, and surprise most everyone caught in their deadly path. They are sneaker waves of the Oregon coast - the biggest possible curse to tourism officials in the state, and the scourge of those too young to be aware of their surroundings or those simply not paying attention...

Take a look at Milan's typographyAfter seeing Jim's previous post showcasing the typography in use on the Oregon coast, I was interested to discover that Typetours are available in certain European cities. These tours allow you to look at cities from a different angle, while examining a variety of typo/graphic forms, including street typography, type on walls, shop windows, churches etc. Typetours are currently available in...

And on the 9th day they rested. For the Equity-mandated day off, the entire JAW company, along with most of Portland Center Stage's staff, decamped for the Oregon Coast. An hour's drive transported us from Portlandia to Ecotopia's rocky, commanding coastline, viewed from high atop Ecola State Park. The actual beach was a vertiginous mile-and-a-half hike through the woods, past woodland flowers and gurgling brooks and...

Stumbling Onto the Untamed on Oregon's Coast: "Another spot to keep an eye out for is a hidden spot known as Depoe View Park, lurking behind the northern part of Depoe Bay. Look for Vista St. along the northern part of Depoe Bay, and this will lead you into a neighborhood and a sign that reads 'to the rocks.' Take that lead, and you'll find an amazing span of puffy, bubble-like basalt...

JAWsomeEcco, the latest vlog created for JAW by the fab Patrick Weishampel. I never seem to wind up in any of these....is this because I'm a moving target at the Festival, or is it just because I'm pulchritudinously challenged, eh, PW??? If you look closely during the one of the canteen interviews, you can see supernova Storm Large gesticulating in the background, and then later rehearsing a... This morning, though, we're all on hiatus -- packing the sun block and heading to the stunning Oregon Coast to breathe in a few negat...

'Danger zone'On the home page of the Coos Bay/North Bend airport web site, there's a neat UTube showing the three and a half minutes or so leading up to land at the airport, showing the landscape around, the sea, the roads - it's a little hypnotic. There's a theme song, too, Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone." Which has some applicability at this point, since a danger zone is what the community seems to be...of its size in the Northwest. But it has had a solid commercial airport, the only one on the Oregon Coast. Its airline, its only air...

Anniversary at the CoastOur fourth wedding anniversary was last Thursday, so the farmer and I packed our bags and headed to the coast last Sunday. We stayed at the Inn at Spanish Head in Lincoln City, because we weren't sure where we wanted to hike this year, and Lincoln City is a good starting point to explore either north or south. We reserved a room with a kitchen, which is wonderful for brewing up a cup of hot...in the past four years, but we think our long weekends at the coast are just as wonderful. The Oregon Coast is as gorgeous as any plac...
