The new Planned Parenthood building that is supposed to go up on NE Martin Luther King Ave. has had it's share of protesters. Apparently, there are enough of them to scare away Walsh Construction, according to The Oregonian: The construction company that was set to build a Planned Parenthood clinic in Northeast Portland has pulled out of the project because of pressure from anti-abortion...

And this time it ain't my fault! I wondered why I was getting comments again on these old posts, and then a friend and fellow blogger (thanks Stephanie!) sent me a link to this story in today's Oregonian:Portland shop defends its Dixie flags Belmont Street neighbors support protesters who covered up flags with Martin Luther King Jr.'s image; owners call it vandalism It's a great article—well...

Interesting story. The Confederate flag raises hackles everywhere, but I am surprised that this comes up in Sunnyside. Since segregationists adopted the flag as a symbol for the resistance against civil rights, the meaning associated with the flag has been permanently changed. In The Oregonian's story the head of the Louisiana State history department says people have forgotten the other things...came by in the middle of the night and covered up the rebel flags with big tin signs depicting Martin Luther King Jr. with the inscript...

Food Carts, Sharp Knives and the BoulevardA long-delayed piece on the food cart lot in Sellwood finally ran in today's Oregonian. The article (attempts) to address some of the regulations that food carts have to deal with, and complaints that the rules are unclear, unevenly applied, and unfairly enforced. Essentially, enforcement happens as a response to a complaint. Meanwhile, vendors can get the go-ahead to open and...been so busy he figured it had already run. Sorry Mike. Finally, the saga of life on Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard contin...

This corridor of MLK very much needs this development. It is unfortunate that the timing of these projects came on line when the economy took a down turn. Having The Heritage Building foreclosed and sold off would be a serious blow to the effort to improve this area. I think PDC is doing the right thing by helping secure the new loan. This area needs the support through this slow economy. When...

Let Them Eat PoundcakeMiss Anita Smith, proprietress of Hannah Bea's Poundcake and More, has earned a fair share of media coverage in the seven-plus years she ran her business on Northeast Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, here in Portland. It will close this weekend, in debt. But in the past several days, what might have been a swan-song round of coverage instead turned ugly. S. Renee Mitchell, a Metro...
