As of Friday, September 5, at 4 p.m., the historic McMenamins Kennedy School (5736 NE 33rd Ave.), a 1915 elementary school turned hotel, will offer yet another spot where guests and visitors can enjoy a drink, have a meal, play some pool and more. The bar is set in, oddly enough, the school's former boiler room. An ordinary-looking hallway door opens to reveal a huge, multilevel bar with room for...

Today's batch of pictures is a bit smalll . Worse, Flickr's on the fritz and the slideshow application's not working. Instead, click through to the Flickr page where you can see them all, including some text descriptions. I also wanted to link to the major speeches given thus far in the convention, in case you missed any of them: Joe Biden John Kerry Bill Clinton Hillary Clinton...Obama by acclamation Hillary Clinton Michelle Obama Ted Kennedy Since we're headed to Invesco today, I'm not taking the laptop (no...posted on BlueOregon - 10:11 AM

I can't believe I'm going to type this, but ... I'm getting swept up in the Democratic Convention. Not that I'm not into politics. I think ya know, Rock the Vote and all that. I just find politicians so BORING. So full of "scandals" that are no longer scandals. Like really? Another politician cheated on his wife? With a dude? In a men's bathroom at an airport? Excuse me...going with this post, but HI! As I started reflecting on this historic election. Where Ted Kennedy with his Baastaaan kick ass politi...

The anticipation is exquisite. And every day it escalates. I've been watching political conventions on TV ever since I was a little girl, and you'd think I would have figured this out by now. But watching on television is not at all the same experience as being in the hall. And yesterday was a great illustration of that principle. In a "normal" year (as in, any year other than this year),...speeches, including a surprisingly passionate appearance by Ted Sorensen, one of President Kennedy's closest advisors, as well as engag...posted on Loaded Orygun - 11:41 AM -

Although I wont be able to post this until later, I write at about seven, just as Kathleen Sebelius is taking the stage. Ive spent the past couple hours investigating The Big Story, in some cases the only story were hearing during this convention. Marc Abrams reprised a variant of it here on BlueOregon earlier today. It goes like this (you know the tune, dance with me)... Its not the agitation of a fight, its the same feeling the place had yesterday during Kennedys appearance--though th...

I have been watching the DNC convention for the past couple days. Basically, the speeches have been really good, really surprisingly forceful. I loved that we saw Ted Kennedy, with his hair half shorn, looking like a lion in winter. I love the very flattering, very glamourous over view of Michelle Obama. And it was far too cute with the Obama children! But I think the most spellbinding speech so...
Flip around the am radio dial a bit. Though, in most of the country, acreage-wise especially, it will be all one splot of Republicans talking, but if there is a "Progressive Talk Radio" station, or if it's dark out so signals will bounce through from the Big City, the exercise will be possible. Do the simple contrast of Alternative Existences. Party Conventions reduce the political...everyone is brilliant, the right notes have been struck, Unity is achieved, there's that cheer-ful Kennedy Tribute which even his polit...

Democrats here in Denver held today what was billed as their first-ever Faith Caucus meeting. Delegates and guests heard from leading religious leaders about issues of concern to Americas diverse faith community: poverty, abortion, Iraq, and health care were among the topics addressed. Former U.S. Rep. Tim Roemer, now aligned with a Roman Catholic public policy group,...and quipped that Republicans were pro-life only until the child was born. Roemer, quoting Robert Kennedy, urged increases in programs &...
I cried last night, I admit it. I cried more than once. I choked up listening to Caroline Kennedy introduce her Uncle Teddy, and fought back tears watching the video tribute to him that followed. (One benefit of Oregon's extremely oblique view of the proceedings: during the video tribute, even in the darkened hall, I could see convention workers bringing out a stool for Teddy and placing...posted on Loaded Orygun - 2:26 PM - [2 clicks] -
