Hurricane Gustav, the tropical storm bearing down on the Gulf Coast, could be a test for the country's wireless carriers, which faced criticism and a regulatory push after Hurricane Katrina took out networks. Sprint Nextel's Emergency Response Team, with trucks that can act as cell towers, was "caravaning down, military-style," to the Gulf Coast on Friday. In 2007, Sprint installed permanent...wireless carrier, have added capacity and replaced some cables with optical fiber, to resist flooding. While cell towers may sur...Wednesday, August 27th
Around here the word "Katrina" is uttered with reverence and almost always accompanied by a sigh of remembered exhaustion. Nobody wants anybody to have to go through that again. And now Hurricane Gustav is tracking a similar path, prompting New Orleans to consider evacuation. Gustav has, sadly, already proved fatal as it moved through Cuba causing landslides and flooding. National HQ has...A scathing description: Katrina hit New Orleans and the Gulf Coast three years ago this week. The president promised to do whatever it took to rebuild. But the nation is trying to fight wars in several countries and is dealing with economic crisis. The attention of the president wandered away. Like a sugar-addled adolescent with a new Gameboy. History will not be kind, nor should it. New... [

Just before arriving at the Art Institute of Portland yesterday (see previous post), my wife called me. I was expecting her to put the kids on and wish me a good day. What I heard instead caused my brain to pause for a few seconds: How do I shut off the water to the whole house?" She asked. The answer is simple, the explanation takes time. Apparently one of our kids had broken...bathtub faucet off and there was water spraying into the air and flooding our master bathroom...quickley. The problem with my reply is...Friday, August 22nd
So, are you still hungry? Everyone pleasure centers are probably screaming for mercy, but this is America you guys. More is better, right? NOAA satellite photo shows Fay rolling across Florida this morning, dumping flooding rains across the state I've followed the Georgia drought for many reasons. Two are, scientists have told us that with (gasp) global warming we should have more hurricanes and I am curious if prolonged drought in Georgia will cause a massive migration from the state ala the Okies in the 1930s. We don't...filed under: flooding

Suppose you need to travel to Panama City Beach or anywhere on the Florida panhandle by air tomorrow. According to the NHC predictions, Fay, though merely a tropical storm, will be passing through about that time. US Air has offered a free change to its passengers. In fact, Delta offered changes to other parts of Florida through yesterday. Today, Delta wants to charge $100 per ticket. I have...MPH...70 TO 90 KM/HR. So now that you've had the perfect start with the guacamole and padron peppers from yesterday's post, the edge is off the hunger and a little groove is setting in from the pre-dinner beverages, it's time to really kick it in and get the love going with this awesome, über-seasonal roasted corn potato salad and a kick ass grilled leg of lamb. Both of these are, as everything should be...it. Grilling the corn really caramelizes the sugars and intensifies the flavors.
