They should take away my restaurant reviewing privileges. Luckily, no one is paying me, so they can't, muwahahaha! But I do feel so depressed when I do Eugene restaurant reviews, because I *want* them to be good. I really do. That said, I'm happy to report that Billy Mac's on 19th and Jefferson is not terrible....

As if a 19-year old University of Oregon student activist being tasered repeatedly by the police at a rally in support of Lane County ending the practice of roadside pesticide spraying wasn't f---ed up enough, it has now been discovered that it wasn't just the Eugene Police that were harassing peaceful demonstrators. In fact, it seems that police presence was demanded by the Department of Homeland...

This is my second try, I'm trying to come up with the right word here, phoning in the blog post with the jott system. It's an interesting system, I make a phone call and what I say into the phone presumably, becomes a post on the blog. Right now I'm walking towards the bus on a beautiful Friday afternoon in Eugene(?), 85 degrees out, the Olympic trials are just beginning around town and there...

Went to Montana for a week during the break between spring and summer term. It was fun, check out the photos (see flickr feed). Saw a real live, wild black bear. It was exciting. Tomorrow: Chas Bowie at Quality Pictures.Chas Bowie, bastard that he is, left the Mercury a while ago to focus on some "personal projects." If I ever leave the Mercury to work on "personal projects," you can rest assured that what I'll really be working on is a couple of well whiskeys at Union Jack's; Chas, on the other hand, has managed to get some pretty great arts- and Portland-related things off the ground. First, there's...as a remarkably formal abstraction by Roger Fenton of the queen's rifle target from 1860; Ralph Eugene Meatyard's hallucinatory composi...

Saturday Market #12: A Very Merry Solstice IndeedOfficially, celestially, Summer started on Saturday and got off to its usual Willamette Valley sluggish start... I love walking onto the Park Blocks in the morning and finding somebody like Ken Silverman on stage, playing Joplin rags and Cole Porter and Gershwin tunes effortlessly. The crowd is trickling in, sitting appreciatively with coffee and morning food, zoning out before the day really...up and I saw the huge NBC Sports logo on his back and realized, no, he's just out here to get some Eugene footage, and fortunately Euge...

The Register Guard recently reported that the State of Oregon has given Eugene approximately $200k to clean up the city in advance of the Olympic Trials. This has been fantastic, and has discouraged graffiti "artists" from polluting sidewalks and signs in parks. It has also impacted Eugene citizens' perception of their city, and city leadership. Temporarily at least. All for $200k. I encourage...
