Sunday morning toons: Special 'Almost Monday' EditionSorry I'm late getting this posted. Without further dilly-dallying, let's kick things off with Daryl Cagle's round-up of political toons for the week. It's full of oil shock, dead satirists, suffering oil executives, and--oddly enough--battery contests. p3 Picks of the Week: Mike Lane, Jerry Holbert, Scott Stantis, John Branch, Thomas Boldt, and John Cole. Tributes to George Carlin: Mike...it delicately, a complicated one. p3 Bonus Toon: Jesse Springer salutes the Olympic try-outs in Eugene. (Click to enlarge.)...

Playing Catch up!OK - its been a long month! Four weddings (one of them over 600 miles away), a week long workshop that I not only taught at but also compiled and printed the 80 page report for each of the 60 attendees, and started working for the Habitat for Humanity - in my voluminous spare time! LOL So I will have quite a few posts coming up including last weeks adventure in Eugene, Tiffany and Nick's...

The Obama and McCain campaigns are preparing to fight it out in Oregon. But there's a slight imbalance in the level of resource commitment: On one side: About 70 "Obama organizing fellows" have poured into Oregon in the last week, out of 3,600 volunteers dispatched nationwide. They'll spend the next six weeks or so phone-banking and registering voters on their candidate's behalf. And, uhm, on...with gumption first thing every morning. Which is good news for Portland, and perhaps bad news for Eugene, since the Oregon Bach Festiv...

With this weekend's heat (finally!), I knew I'd have to harvest the rest of my spring greens and snowpeas, plus with the Olympic Trials starting in Eugene with all its attendant crowds at local restaurants, it seemed the perfect time to stay at home. So we decided to host an impromptu barbecue! Retrogrouch manned the...

Summer...~~~ “The men of experiment are like the ant; they only collect and use. But the bee . . . gathers its materials from the flowers of the garden and of the field, but transforms and digests it by a power of its own.” ~ Leonardo da Vinci ~~~ Somebody please tell me that summertime is the season to be busy... holy cow... Gardening, work, the kids, work, baseball season, work... and I'm...in so I'm guessing that it will be a job of preparing that in the fall for next spring. ~~~ The Eugene Emeralds' season has started an...

'School Choice' - for whom....The problem with our education system is not that parents do not have a choice. The problem is that inequities continue to exist. —Patsy Mink Portland Public Schools (PPS) educator and parent Nancy Smith wrote a recent commentary on the PPS decision not to decide on the inequities that exist within the school choice model... School choice, the taken for granted reform of the last two... When it comes to this public trust it seems the state giveth and the state taketh away... The Eugene School Board wrestled with this...

Tomorrow: Chas Bowie at Quality Pictures.Chas Bowie, bastard that he is, left the Mercury a while ago to focus on some "personal projects." If I ever leave the Mercury to work on "personal projects," you can rest assured that what I'll really be working on is a couple of well whiskeys at Union Jack's; Chas, on the other hand, has managed to get some pretty great arts- and Portland-related things off the ground. First, there's...as a remarkably formal abstraction by Roger Fenton of the queen's rifle target from 1860; Ralph Eugene Meatyard's hallucinatory composi...
